Community members set boundaries against the constitutive outside (Cohen, 1985), creating a warm, homelike place that is resistant to intrusion (Bauman, 2001). What bind a community are shared understandings about what it is to belong together. These come from a distinctiveness and sameness within (Bauman, 2001). Kinship bonds are forged and friendships are gained through symbolic interaction (Cohen, 1985).

Which methodological approach did Spinuzzi et al use to conduct their research?
We used a linked qualitative case study approach (similar to Jakonen et al. 2017). In all cases, the researchers collected semistructured interviews with coworking site managers, who play a key role in such sites (Ivaldi et al. 2018), as well as with coworkers; conducted participant-observations of the coworking spaces; and collected artifacts (such as documents, photos, and website screen captures) from each site.
