Who is your client as a consultant?

The one who hired you.

400

List strategies an OT can use to support health literacy.

1. Use simple, everyday language and avoid jargon. Speak to a client as if you were in your living

room, and avoid using medical terminology. Select plain words in verbal communication, such as

“take care of” in place of “manage,” “stand up” in place of “transfer,” or “turn palm facing up”

rather than “supinate.”

2. Limit take-away points to two or three. Studies show that patients forget 40% to 80% of

information presented to them (Kessels, 2003) and that fewer than 50% of information may be

recalled correctly (Laws et al, 2018). Can a home exercise program, for example, be focused on

two exercises rather than six?

3. Use models, illustrations, or X-rays to educate. Some patients are visual learners, so reach

them with what works best. The use of drawings may help the client understand why instructions

are so important to follow.

4. Use a medical translator or interpreter when there is a language barrier between the health

care provider and the client.

5. Use the teach-back method as described below to encourage shame-free communication and

optimal client understanding.
