What is physics?

The study of matter, energy, motion, and forces

100

What is a particle consisting of two or more atoms chemically tied together

Molecule

100

True or False: New technologies are only beneficial and never harmful. If False Explain why.

False. New technologies can be beneficial and harmful.

100

Describe the separation process the miners used during the California gold rush.

Miners took metal pans and washed the mixture of river sediments. The smooth metal pans had slightly angled sides and as the miners swirled the water, the lighter particles washed over the sides, leaving the heavier particles, including the gold pieces, in the bottom. After the heavy pieces dried, miners used a magnet to remove some of the iron-rich sand and then picked out the gold from what was left in the pan.

100

The particles in a suspension are large enough to see.

True

200

What is the smallest unit into which an element can be divided and still maintain the properties of the element

Atom

200

Why is it necessary to classify matter?

It helps to understand God's Creation.

200

What is a Pure Substance

A substance of constant composition that possess definite qualities

200

Which process separates salt from water?

distillation

200

What is the way Mr. Hebb explained what you need to do with a suspension when it settles?

Shake it Up Shake it Up.

300

What is Matter?

anything that has mass and takes up space

300

What do chemists want to learn?

How atoms and molecules interact

300

True or False: Water is an element. If False Explain Why

False. Water is a compound because it is made up of more than one element.

300

Explain how to separate sand from water. What is this separation method called?

Pour the water and sand mixture through a paper filter into a jar. The sand will stay in the filter and the water will end up in the jar. The method of separation is filtration.

300

What physical response identifies a colloid?

The Tyndall effect

400

What is a mixture in which the particles of a substance are mixed enough to settle

Suspension

400

If the length of a wall is 48.75 ft, what is its length in centimeters? (1 in. = 2.54 cm)

(48.75 ft/1) × (12 in./1 ft ) × (2.54 cm/1 in.) = 1,485.9 cm

400

What type of substance has multiple components that are chemically combined in fixed proportions?

Compound

400

True or False: Filter paper can be used to separate salt from water. If False explain why.

False. Distillation can be used to separate salt from water.

400

What is the Tyndall effect and why is it important?

The Tyndall effect is the scattering of light that happens when a light is directed at a colloid. It provides indirect evidence that the substance has separate particles and is therefore a colloid.

500

What is a combination of substances in which the particles are not uniformly distributed

Heterogeneous mixture

500

If a building is 174 m tall, what is its height in ft? (1 m = 3.28 ft)

570.72 ft

500

How are elements and compounds similar?

Elements and compounds are similar in that they are both pure substances. They are chemically combined and are the same throughout the whole substance.

500

Explain how to distinguish a compound from a homogeneous mixture.

The chemical composition must be determined. If the components are chemically combined, the substance is a compound. If the components are not chemically combined, the substance is a homogeneous mixture.

500

How can a colloid be distinguished from a homogeneous mixture?

Indirect Evidence
