You should not touch any of these items. For alcohol, have the student dump it down the drain and dispose of the bottle. For cannabis or cannabis paraphernalia, you should contact campus safety to come pick up the violations.

A mandated reporter statement is when you inform a student that you are a mandated reporter and you must document information disclosed to you. This is a legal requirement of all of us. Mandated reporter statements should be given when someone tells you something heavy, including but not limited to domestic violence, sexual assault, etc.

R: approach the resident and annouce yourself as an RA

A: ask them to cease the use of tobacco during your conversation

P: explain the tobacco policy: there is no smoking or use of chewing tobacco in the residence halls. Ask them to exit the building if they would like to continue use. 

I: inform them you will need to document the situation

D: write an incident report.
