What was The Wall compared to throughout the presentation?
The Berlin Wall
What are the Brahmins equal to in the Handmaid's Tale class system?
The Wives (Commander's wife).
What impunity does Gilead show towards women?
Men are never blamed, and women are only blamed.
Why was The Wall placed in Gilead? Give two reasons and compare them to the Berlin Wall.
To isolate and prevent people from escaping Gilead. Prevent the east side of Berlin from escaping and for isolation.
Just like a handmaid can become an unwoman if she disobeys Gilead, can a man who is a Sudra (servant) become an untouchable in this life if he kills someone?
Not in this life because reincarnation will reach him once he dies, and then, due to bad karma, he will become untouchable.
Do you think that women in Gilead or women in a Middle Eastern country that has not implemented women's rights could fight for their rights? Explain why or why not?
It depends, but the rebellion will not end well if the country is too dominant. It depends on how smart women are in society to make it happen.
What elements were added to the Wall that made it look scary for the people to escape? Give me three elements and compare them to the Berlin Wall.
Security system/watch tower. Armed men. Getting killed.
Name three differences between the caste system and the Handmaid's class system?
Have a goal to reach Brahman by going through the stages. You can't change class. Marriage/sexual relations are prohibited in different classes (only within the same class).
Why do you think women's rights still haven't been implemented in countries that don't have women's rights? (Three factors that contribute to this)
Manipulation, power, and control are all factors that eliminate women's rights and are shown in The Handmaid's Tale.
How is fear portrayed in The Wall and The Berlin Wall? Why do they use a physical barrier to show off power?
Fear is portrayed in leaving dead hanging people who rebel against Gilead society, and at the Berlin Wall, some guards immediately kill people who try to trespass. The physical barrier is there to show control over people's ideologies to maintain only one (manipulation of fear).
Name three similarities the social class system has with the Handmaid's Tale class system?
Both are based on Reiligoius' ideologies. Limited rights to the class. Both the women and the untouchable class clean the areas.
How does censorship play a role in Gilead/Iran?
The reason why censorship is placed in Gilead and Iran is to limit the truth and not show anything that could make the people more potent in the community to create a rebellion.
How do these walls isolate individuals? Not only physically, but mentally and emotionally? Provide three examples of either the Berlin Wall or the Wall.
Ex. Families split from families in the eastern and western parts of Berlin. People lose the ability to express emotions and only maintain them to themselves. They have a trapped mindset and lose hope of escaping and achieving peace and joy.
Gandhi and Offred showed some similarities between each other. Maybe not in action, but in a form of oppression. What do Offred and Gandhi show as an act of oppression towards rebelling against society?
Gandhi and Offred both show and act against oppression by willingly resisting society in a more peaceful manner. Offred shows this by stating it in her mind, and Gandhi by not getting aggressive with the crowd/protests.
How does The Handmaid's Tale show the real-world practice of child marriage through forced marriage and no consent?
Children are manipulated in reproduction at a very young age, with no consent or decision to make. In The Handmaid's Tale, they basically groom the children to become handmaids. They are manipulating children to think that what they are doing is right.
