List 3 types of energy

Thermal, water, coal, wind, sound, gravitational, chemical, mechanical, electrical

What does a non-renewable energy source mean?

A non-renewable energy source refers to using resources that cannot be replaced easily. For example fossil fuels such as coal, oil and gas.

List 3 ways we use energy at school

Computers, projectors, running in gym, lights, etc.

100

Define non-renewable

A resource that is not able to grow again or to be made again.

200

Give an example of gravitational energy

When a pencil drops, a leaf falls from a tree, etc.

200

Which type of energy source is worse for our environment? Why?

Non-renewable energy sources are worse for our environment. This is because they require burning fossil fuels which emits toxins into the air and pollutes the Earth. They also cannot be reused and are more wasteful.

200

List 3 ways we use electricity at home.

Cell phones, computers, oven, fridge, stove, hairdryer, etc.
200

Why is using coal as a source of generating electricity harmful to the environment?

Coal is harmful because the burning of coal to produce electricity emits smoke into the air. The smoke can include carbon dioxide, sulphur dioxide and carbon monoxide which can be very harmful.

Thermal energy is the amount of _______ temperature that occurs due to the movement of particles in matter. (increased or decreased).

Increased

Wind, solar and hydro are three examples of renewable energy. Choose one and explain how it works.

Wind: wind energy works by harnessing the movement of the wind. The blade on each tower catch the wind and spin, these blades are connected to a generator that converts the movement into electricity.

Solar: people have started to use solar panels on their houses, they capture the sun's energy and covert into electricity in two different ways. Solar thermal power plants produce electricity by concentrating the sun's energy/heat to heat up a liquid to create steam that spins a turbine in a generator.

Hydro: wheat mills were often found near rivers because they used the moving water to spin a water wheel that helped drive machines that ground up grains.

300

List 3 ways we can reduce our use of electricity.

Walk instead of drive, carpool, take shorter showers, buy local food, use Tupperware instead of plastic bags, reuse shopping bags.

Which type of energy does Canada produce the most of? Natural gas, crude oil, coal, hydro, nuclear or NGLs.

Crude oil

How is sound energy produced?
When a force creates vibrations in an object. The vibrations cause waves of pressure that travel through the form of matter (air, water, wood, metal, etc.)

The following are examples of renewable energy sources except: water, coal, wind and the sun

Coal

Why is it bad for us to rely on non-renewable resources?

Non-renewable resources are limited and if we use them too frequently, they will run out. Secondly, using non-renewable resources causes pollution and can contribute to global warming.
