Let's Play Ball
The player swings the bat and the baseball flies high. You know baseballs are hard, but perhaps
you might wonder what is in them and how they are created.
The first baseballs were handmade by wrapping yarn into a tight ball. Then, the yarn ball was
covered with pieces of horse's hide sewn together, making each ball slightly different.
We still make baseballs almost the same way; however, all of today's baseballs are the same size
and shape. The center is a little ball of cork and rubber. Yarn is wrapped around the ball, and two
pieces of cow's hide make the cover. The pieces are sewn together with red thread. A baseball is
nine inches around and each ball weighs five ounces. Thousands of baseballs are made exactly like
this every year.
