List ALL the components of a properly labeled coordinate plane.
X-axis, Y-axis, Quadrants I,II,III and IV, (+) and (-) indicators for each axis, units.
100
All of the following shapes are symmetrical, True or False? a) Circle b) Isosceles triangle c) Rectangle d) Oval
Yes, if "line of symmetry" is drawn properly.
100
What is the opposite of the opposite of -9?
-9 The opposite of an opposite is just that term (they cancel).
200
What is the "Origin"?
The "starting" point. (0, 0)
200
Given you have a 20 x 20 grid, what are the appropriate scales for the X-axis and Y-axis for the ordered pairs (3, 40), (-8, 90), (-7, -22), (9.5, -85), and (0, 0)?
X-axis units = 1 for a range from -10 to 10 Y-axis units = 10 for a range from -100 to 100
200
What are the coordinates of the reflection of (-5, 8) over the X-axis? over the Y-axis?
(-5, -8) over the X-axis. (5, 8) over the Y-axis.
300
Match the following words and describe (horizontal, vertical, Y-axis, X-axis).
X-axis is HORizontal (HORSE Runs across the flat HORizon); Y-axis is vertical (up and down).
300
Does reflecting ordered pairs (3, 6) and (3, -3) over the Y-axis provide a symmetrical shape? Over the X-axis?
Yes for Y-axis (rectangle) No for X-axis (line segment)
300
What is the location of the ordered pair when 5 is added to the Y-coordinate of (3, -3)?
(3, 2) Only the Y-value changes.
400
Define and describe what a "Reflection" is on the coordinate plane.
It's the location you would see in a mirror if you placed a mirror on that axis. The axis creates a line of symmetry. A reflected ordered pair is equi-distance from the axis as the original ordered pair.
400
How do you determine the distance (length) between two order pairs having the same first coordinate?
Using "absolute" value (distance from zero) of the second coordinate. Add if on opposite sides of the X-axis. Find difference if on same side of the X-axis. You can also just count the units between.
400
What is the distance (length) between (9, 8) and (9, -3)?
11.
500
Describe the similarities and differences between a Number Line and a Coordinate Plane.
The coordinate plane (CP) is two number lines crossing perpendicular at their zero midpoints, which creates the "origin". The coordinate plane (looks like graph paper) is used to locate a specific location using two coordinates. A number line only has one coordinate. The CP has units (scaling) like a number line. They both use "absolute value" to determine distance (length)
500
Do the terms: "ordered pairs", "coordinates" and "x-coordinate, y-coordinate" mean the same thing? Explain.
Yes, they are synonymous.
500
Given you have a grid 10 units by 10 units, what scale for the X-axis and Y-axis units would you use for the following coordinates? (18, -40), (-12, 95), (0, -70), (16, -10), and (4, 10)?
X-axis would utilize units = 2 to provide range from -20 to 20 Y-axis would utilize units = 10 to provide range from -100 to 100
