What is "naming the feeling," and why is it important?  

Naming the feeling means that you can notice how you are feeling and give a name to it, like "sad," "mad," "happy," "jealous," "excited," etc.  This is important because when we can recognize what we are feeling and why, it can be easier to understand and cope with the feeling.  It can also reduce distress and help you with regulation.

How can exercise help with regulation?

Exercise gives our muscles and joints stimulation, which some people need lots of to help with regulation.  It also creates certain chemicals in the brain that help improve mood and executive functioning (which includes things like impulse control).

What is attention-shifting?

Attention-shifting is being able to change your focus to something other than what is bothering you.  This can help you avoid big emotional reactions.  Remember--we want to avoid unhelpful reactions, not the emotions themselves!  Sometimes distracting yourself for a short while helps you to come back to the emotion with a fresh outlook and more capacity for dealing with what is upsetting you.
