What is a Legal Brief (or Case Analysis)?
The total amount of time, in minutes, generally allotted to each side (Appellant and Respondent) for oral argument.
What is 20 minutes?
The typical number of student judges that sit on an appeals panel to hear a case.
What is 3 (or sometimes 5 or 7, depending on YIG rules, but 3 is the standard appellate panel)?
The type of argument that the Appellant (the moving party) has the right to reserve for the end of the round.
What is Rebuttal?
The term for the attorney who appealed the trial court's ruling and is arguing for the decision to be reversed.
Who is the Appellant (or Petitioner)?
The specific point in the oral argument where student judges are permitted to begin interrupting the attorneys with questions.
What is after the first two minutes (the introduction)?
The two possible roles that a YIG delegate may serve in the Courts program besides "Attorney."
What are Judge (or Justice) and Clerk (or Bailiff)?
A polite salutation or phrase used to defer to another judge on the panel before asking a question.
What is "With all due respect to the court" or "Permission to approach the bench" (or similar deferential language)?
The title of the student responsible for managing the courtroom, keeping time, and ensuring proper procedure is followed.
Who is the Clerk (or Bailiff)?
This is what the Respondent must do at the beginning of their argument before stating their main points.

The primary reason appellate judges do not hear from witnesses or examine physical evidence.
