When a person owns land, then let’s other people use the land in exchange for part of what was grown on it. The people also had to buy equipment with high interest rates, so at the end of every season they owed more money than they made. Sharecroppers got stuck in a cycle of debt they could not pay off. If they could not pay off debt, they had to remain on the land
