What does CPR stand for?

Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation

200

What is the first step of CPR?

Check the scene for Danger.

200

True or False: Hands need to be side by side pushing into the chest for successful CPR.

FALSE, they need to be interlocked on top of each other.
200

How should your hands be placed on the person to perform chest compressions?

Center of the chest with the fingers interlocked.

200

What is the name of the largest artery in your body?

The last thing the oxygen rich blood passes through in the heart.

Aorta Atery

400

When do you stop CPR?

• The scene becomes unsafe

• The victim shows obvious signs of life

• You become Exhausted

• Another trained rescuer arrives or takes

over

• You are too exhausted to continue

400

What is the second step of CPR?

Check for responsiveness/signs of life. Pulse, breathing, tapping, shouting.

400

True or False: You should lock your elbows when giving chest compressions

TRUE

400

True or False: Chest compressions are an optional step when performing CPR.

False: That is the entire point of CPR

400

If you diced a heart horizontally and were looking at the top piece, what are those two chambers called?

Right and Left Atriums
600

What is Cardiac Arrest?

When the heart stops or beats too ineffectively to push blood through the body.

600

After you have checked for signs of life what do you do then?

CALL 911 if life threatening

600

True or False.  The depth of chest compression on an adult is 2 inches?

False!  AT LEAST 2 inches

600

Where should you shift your body weight when you're performing CPR?

Over your hands. Lining up your shoulders over your hands.

600

When performing CPR, what muscle are you "mechanically' forcing to work?

The heart

800

What is a heart attack?

Blood flow to some parts of the heart is

compromised.

800

Why is it important that the body is on a hard surface when performing compressions?

For effective pressure/compressions it needs a hard surface to rebound off of. If the person is on a mattress it will be too soft and ineffective.

800

True or false: You should always send someone to retrieve an AED when you're performing CPR.

TRUE

800

True or False: When giving rescue breaths, no matter what you should always give two rescue breaths.

False. Rescue breaths are optional when performing CPR.

800
Why is the left side of the heart bigger/stronger?

It is having to pump oxygenated blood out into the entire body.

1000

Why can someone go from a heart attack into cardiac arrest, but not cardiac arrest to a heart attack?

A heart attack is a plumbing problem (blocked blood flow) that can lead to electrical problems (cardiac arrest), while cardiac arrest is primarily an electrical problem that stops blood flow

1000

Describe the five steps of CPR in detail.

1. Check the scene for danger.

2. Shake and shout for responsiveness

3. Call 911.

4. Start CPR - 100/120 compressions per minute or 30:2 rescue breaths

5. Repeat if not awake, and wait for paramedics

1000

Can you be sued for not performing CPR on a stranger?

No! Because of Good Samaritan laws. These laws protect individuals who provide emergency medical assistance in good faith from liability for negligence

1000

Why is it important to act quickly and confidently during CPR, even if you're not sure you're doing it perfectly?

It is important in emergencies to act quickly and confidently. The role of bystanders in saving lives, and how doing something is often better than doing nothing

1000

Describe the journey of blood flow throughout the heart.

Deoxygenated blood comes into the right atrium from the body, moves into the right ventricle and is pushed into the pulmonary arteries to the lungs.

After picking up oxygen, the now oxygen rich blood travels back to the heart through the pulmonary veins into the left atrium, to the left ventricle and out to the body's tissues through the aorta.
