Because the slave population was so great (in some counties outnumbering the free population) harsh laws needed to be implemented in order to reduce the likelihood of slave rebellions.

New England: Largely based upon the family unit because most work is done for self-sufficiency.
Middle colonies: A hybrid of family labor, tenant workers/wage laborers, and slaves.
