According to Beccaria (1764), what are the three main tenants of optimal punishment? In other words, explain deterrence theory using his three requirements for punishment.

Beccaria believed that punishment must be swift, severe, and certain in order to deter future criminality.

1) Swift: The punishment should quickly follow the criminal wrongdoing.

2) Severe: This only means that the punishment should fit the crime, so we are talking about proportionality here.

3) Certain: Here, the would-be offender must be certain that they will be caught and punished if they engage in crime.
