Stuff about Color
100
This element refers to the creation of visual perspective; this gives the illusion of depth. It can also mean the way an artist uses the area within the picture plane.
What is space?
100
This principle of design refers to the equal distribution of visual weight. There are two types of this principle.
What are asymmetrical and symmetrical balance?
100
Any part in a lowercase letter that extends above the x-height, found for example in b, d, f, h, k, etc. Some types of ascenders have specific names.
What is an ascender?
100
The vertical space between lines of text (baseline to baseline). This is also called linespacing.
What is leading?
100
This is a matching system used for specifying and blending match colors. It provides designers with swatches of over 700 colors and gives printers the recipes for making those colors. These are generally used as spot colors, such as logos, to ensure color consistency for corporate identities.
What is PMS or Pantone Matching System?
200
One always has two dimensions, length as well as width. This is represented as an enclosed area that is defined by color, value, space, texture and form. The other always has three dimensions; length, width and height. Examples of such would be cubes, pyramids, spheres or even cylinders. Sculptures and decorative arts serve as good examples for form.
What is the difference between a shape and a form?
200
This refers to the arrangement of visual elements, giving stress or importance to some visual elements , thereby allowing two actions: information to be easily gleaned and the graphic design to be easily received. This is how FOCAL points are established
What is emphasis?
200
The distance between the baseline of a line of type and tops of the main body of lowercase letters (i.e. excluding ascenders or descenders).
What is x-height?
200
In layout, we refer to the body of a layout as this.
What is body/copy?
200
What we call any three colors which are side by side on a 12 part color wheel
What is analogous?
300
This refers to the changes in the base color. This is also determined by how much light is reflected or absorbed by any surface. This term refers to the various intensities of the tones or colors.
What is value?
300
A pattern of that is created by repeating or varying elements, with consideration given to the space between them, and by establishing a sense of movement from one element to another.
What is rhythm?
300
The imaginary line upon which the letters in a font appear to rest.
What is a baseline?
300
Any part in a lowercase letter that extends below the baseline, found for example in g, j, p, q, y, etc.
What is a descender?
300
These are inks that are not mixed from the four process colors. They are used for items, like logos, that need to be a consistent color no matter how or where they are printed. Any time you add an extra ink to a print job, it increases the price.
What is a spot color?
400
This term refers to the quality of a surface or the way any work of art is represented. There are three basic types of this: actual, simulated and invented.
What is texture?
400
This is one of primary goals of composition- establishing an integrated whole, rather than unrelated parts
What is unity?
400
The enclosed or partially enclosed circular or curved negative space (white space) of some letters such as d, o, and s.
What is a counter?
400
A collection of related typefaces which share common design traits and a common name is called this.
What is a family?
400
The three pigment colors that can not be mixed or formed by any combination of other colors.
What is red, green and blue (primary colors)?
500
This element of art has three characteristics, which are hue, value and intensity.
What is color?
500
These three things are ways to achieve unity.
What are correspondence, grids, and alignment?
500
The part of a printed document that is outside the bounds of the final size of the piece. It is used to make sure images and other design elements print all the way to the edge of the paper.
What is a bleed?
500
This means to push together characters in order to make a bitter fit of white space and strokes. This often must be done in display type due to the white space amongst characters at bigger sizes being more obvious.
What is kerning?
500
Not formally polite, but any two colors which are directly opposite each other on the color wheel.
What are complimentary colors?
