CUBES Strategy
This "C" in CUBES reminds you to find the important numbers in a word problem.
What is "Circle"?
If there are 4 boxes and each box has 6 crayons, this is the total number of crayons.
What is 24?
12 cookies are shared equally by 3 friends. This is how many cookies each friend gets.
What is 4?
Tom buys 3 packages of markers. Each package has 8 markers. He already had 5 markers at home. This is his new total number of markers.
What is 29?
21 students need to be in groups of 3. This is how many groups there will be.
What is 7?
This "U" asks you to determine what the problem wants you to find.
What is "Underline the question"?
A pizza is cut into 8 slices. If 3 friends each eat 2 slices, this is how many slices they eat total.
What is 6?
Ms. Smith has 20 stickers. She gives 5 stickers to each student. This is how many students get stickers.
What is 4?
A car has 4 wheels. How many wheels do 7 cars have?
What is 28?
You have 30 apples to put into baskets. Each basket holds 6 apples. This is how many baskets you can fill.
What is 5?
This "B" helps you visualize the problem and decide what to do.
"Box the key words"?
A gardener plants 5 rows of flowers. Each row has 9 flowers. This is how many flowers are in the garden.
What is 45?
A baker made 24 cupcakes and put them into boxes that hold 6 cupcakes each. This is how many boxes she needs.
What is 4?
A book has 9 chapters. Each chapter is 6 pages long. This is the total number of pages in the book.
What is 54?
A rope is 36 feet long. If you cut it into 4 equal pieces, this is how long each piece will be.
What is 9 feet?
This "E" means you should check your work for mistakes.
What is "Evaluate"?
There are 7 days in a week. This is how many days there are in 9 weeks.
What is 63?
A class of 27 students is divided into 3 equal groups for a project. This is how many students are in each group.
What is 9?
A square has 4 equal sides. If one side is 7 cm long, this is the distance all the way around the square (perimeter).
What is 28 cm?
Ms. Lee has 40 pieces of candy. After giving each of her 8 students the same amount, she has 0 left. This is how many pieces each student got.

This "S" is the final step where you write your answer in a complete sentence.

A farmer collected 45 eggs. He puts them into cartons that hold 12 eggs each. This is how many full cartons he can make.
