In the case of Plessy v. Ferguson, Plessy rode in a section of a traincar that was for white passengers only. As a biracial person, he was testing the law but he was arrested. He appealed to the Supreme Court, but the Supreme Court said "separate but equal" was OK as long as things were really equal. (But they weren't.)
