Blood Draw from CVC's

Is it safe to connect a vamp system to a CVC for recurrent blood draws?

Yes! Vamp systems can be attached to CVC's. It is important to remove any positive pressure caps before attaching it.

What are the steps of drawing blood from a CVC (without a vamp)?

1. Scrub the hub with alcohol. Using an empty, sterile syringe, withdraw fluid & blood as a waste (~5-10mL) then CLAMP the line.

2. Use a new syringe, scrub the hub again, and withdraw your blood sample.

3. Transfer your blood sample into the appropriate container & label - remain as sterile as possible.

4. Scrub the hub AGAIN, and flush the CVC with NS to lock.

Can you draw blood work from a line infusing medication?

Ideally, we avoid drawing blood work from any infusing line (unless it is only NS).
