300

What type of CVC do we see inserted into brachial, cephalic, or basilic regions?

This is a large bore CVC that TVP's & PA lines can be inserted through.

Introducer Sheath or Cordis

How do we measure the CVC placement?

We use a ruler with cm markings, and measure from the insertion point to the hub.

What are the steps of drawing blood from a CVC (without a vamp)?

1. Scrub the hub with alcohol. Using an empty, sterile syringe, withdraw fluid & blood as a waste (~5-10mL) then CLAMP the line.

2. Use a new syringe, scrub the hub again, and withdraw your blood sample.

3. Transfer your blood sample into the appropriate container & label - remain as sterile as possible.

4. Scrub the hub AGAIN, and flush the CVC with NS to lock.

How often do CVC caps & dressing need to be changed?

What is a large risk of inserting IJ and Subclavian CVC's?

Pneumothorax

500

These are the 2 types of Long term CVC's

1. PICC line

2. Tunneled catheter

True or False: IV fluid must be infusing at all time through a CVC.

IT DEPENDS:

- On a large bore CVC (introducer/cordis) then TRUE.

- In a smaller bore CVC then FALSE.
