Our values in America are changing from being moral to having material things. In 1950 we were still thinking about freedom and equality, but once we got to the 70s and 80s, we started thinking about owning a home or having a ton of money (Shiller 2). We should focus on the individual rights we have. We are obligated to many of our rights. However, people in other countries don’t even have many of the same rights. To show that we believe in our values, we have to support other countries that give their people the same rights that we have.

What is the author’s main claim in the passage?

A People should make better life choices.

B People should worry less about material things.

C People should focus on helping others.

D People should be happy with what they have.

The death penalty is “execution of an offender sentenced to death after conviction by a court of law of a criminal offense.” Right now, the death penalty is currently legal in 31 states and illegal in 19 states. Executions come in the form of lethal injection, electric chair, firing squad, and even gas chamber. The biggest argument for why it should be legalized is retribution, according to the Sacramento District Attorney. This office claims that the death penalty, which is most often used in the case of a homicide, provides justice for a victim’s family. Another point used to validate the use of the death penalty is that it is a deterrent. The possibility of having death as a punishment may encourage people not to commit a crime that would maybe be punished by death.

What is the author’s main claim in the passage?

A The death penalty should no longer be in use.

B The death penalty is still justified by many states.

C The death penalty provides retribution for victims.

D The death penalty should only be used for homicides
