This route gives medication through the mouth and includes swallowing a medication.
What is the oral route?
These are solid dosage forms that may be swallowed, chewed, or dissolved. (2)
What are tablets and capsules?
These medications are used to treat infections caused by bacteria, viruses, fungi, or parasites.
What are anti-infective medications? (will accept antibiotics, antifungal, anitiviral, etc.)
A drug that is taken in an inactive form and becomes active through the natural metabolic processes.
What is a prodrug?
This route places medication under the tongue for absorption.
What is the sublingual route?
These are solid dosage forms designed to dissolve slowly in the mouth. (2)
What are lozenges and troches?
These medications are used to prevent or treat allergic reactions.
What are allergenics?
The process where the concentration of a drug is greatly reduced before it reaches the rest of the body.

This route places medication between the cheek and gum.
What is the buccal route?
These materials are designed to interact with the body and may be used to make medical devices or implants.
What are biomaterials?
These medications affect the brain, spinal cord, mood, behavior, sleep, or nervous system.
What are central nervous system medications?
What is the terms used to describe how much of a substance actually gets into your bloodstream so your body can use it.
What is bioavailability?
These tablets dissolve rapidly in the mouth instead of being swallowed whole.
What are orally disintegrating tablets?
This dosage form is placed inside or under the skin to release medication over time.
What is an implant?
These medications are used to treat diseases and disorders of the lungs and respiratory system.
What are respiratory medications?
The complete set of chemical reactions in living organisms that sustain life, convert food into energy, and build or break down body tissues.
What is Metabolism?
This route applies medication directly to the skin.
