Which dance is the oldest?
Lion Dance. It originated back in the Han Dynasty (205 BCE to 220 CE). One story of how the lion dance started was Kuan Yin’s Compassion: The lion started off as a mystical creature in Heaven. One day, the lion caused too much trouble for the King of Heaven that he cut off his legs and sent the body to Earth. The Goddess of Mercy, Kuan Yin pitied the lion and transformed the lion by adding different elements of other animals onto him. That’s why the lion costume only has the head and body and not the legs. This is also why other animal characters are represented on the lion’s costume.
