What is "The Mexican Voice"?
Hispanic Heritage Month actually began as a commemorative week when it was first introduced by California Congressman George E. Brown. The push to recognize the contributions of the Latinx community had gained momentum throughout the 1960s when the civil rights movement was at its peak and there was a growing awareness of the United States' multicultural identities.

Announced by the National Council of Hispanic Employment Program Managers (NCHEPM), the theme "Unidos: Inclusivity for a Stronger Nation." According to Mora, before the term “Hispanic” was adopted, the census enumerators would often check off people such as Mexican Americans as “White” on the census forms.
This person grew up in East Los Angeles, overcoming challenges to become a public servant with a legacy of building coalitions between diverse constituents.

Cesar Chavez, general director of the National Farm Workers Association, leads 75 Latino and Filipino farm workers on a historic 340-mile march from Delano, California to the state capitol in Sacramento. Drawing attention to the demands of grape growers, the march, held at the onset of a strike that would last five years, lasts 25 days, and upon arrival in Sacramento on Easter Sunday, the group is met by a crowd of 10,000. Later that summer, the NFWA merges with the Agricultural Workers Organizing Committee to form the United Farm Workers union that affiliates with the AFL-CIO.

This identity emerged among anti-assimilationist youth and was widely reclaimed by ethnic Mexicans in the 1960's, 1070's to express political empowerment, ethnic solidarity, and pride of being of Indigenous descent.
Chicano Movement leaders collaborated with Black Power movement. Chicano youth in barrios rejected cultural assimilation into whiteness and embraced their identity and worldview as a form of empowerment and resistance
