Two places the Saints were driven from before arriving at Far West.
Independence, MO (the center place of Zion) and Kirtland, OH (leaving their beloved temple after only two years.)
The Lord identified this place as the center place of Zion in July 1831 (see D&C 57:3). Mobs forced the Saints out of here in November 1833.
Independence (in Jackson County, Missouri)
D&C 115: 5-6 says this about the newly named Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints
5 Verily I say unto you all: Arise and shine forth, that thy light may be a standard for the nations; 6 And that the gathering together upon the land of Zion, and upon her stakes, may be for a defense, and for a refuge from the storm, and from wrath when it shall be poured out without mixture upon the whole earth.
The term tithing in the prayer just quoted and in previous revelations (D&C 64:23; 85:3; 97:11) meant this.
To give not just one-tenth, but all free-will offerings, or contributions, to the Church funds.

Instead of focusing on what they lost prior to Far West, the faithful did this at Far West... (Doctrine and Covenants 117:13).
They just kept building Zion. They made plans for a new temple. Four new Apostles were called. They understood that doing God’s work doesn’t mean you never fall; it means you “rise again.” And though you’ll have to make sacrifices, those sacrifices are sacred to God, even “more sacred … than [your] increase”
A refuge was established here for the Saints 1836–38. It was the headquarters of the Church in 1838. In 1838–39 the Saints were forced to flee to Illinois.
