The incident occurred in the evening in Arles, France, while most of the city was celebrating Christmas. Van Gogh used a razor to cut off his left ear, either the lobe or the entire ear. He wrapped the ear in a cloth, left his house, and went to a brothel in the red-light district. He gave the bloody ear to a woman and disappeared into the night. He returned home the next morning and was found unconscious in a pool of blood.
