The Wikipedia community refers to the community of creators who create and maintain Wikipedia. Individual editors are known as "Wikipedians".

Wikiproject Peoples of the Americas is a collaborative resource and group of Wikipedians dedicated to improving Wikipedia's coverage of Indigenous Peoples of the Americas.
What is an edit-a-thon?
An edit-a-thon is an event where a group of people gather together to edit and improve a specific topic or type of content on Wikipedia.
Is Wikipedia written from a neutral or biased point of view?
Wikipedia strives for its articles to be written from a neutral point of view. Articles should be written in an impartial tone.
Is there a gender gap between people who edit Wikipedia?
Yes! According to Wikipedia there is a large gender gap between editors. Overall only 9% of people who edit Wikipedia are women.

No! Wikipedia is a free resource. People who edit articles do not own that content and it is free to create an account, edit articles, and use information on Wikipedia.

Absolutely! Editors should not engage in personal attacks, edit wars should be avoided, and people should act in good faith.
Good faith, in human interactions, refers to a sincere intention to be fair, open, and honest regardless of the outcome of the situation. Assuming good faith is a fundamental principle on Wikipedia. It is the assumption that editors edits and comments are made in good faith and not intended to hurt the overall project of Wikipedia. Essentially, do not be a troll!

Yes! It is possible and encouraged for people to create pages in Indigenous languages.

Wikipedia notes that it exists for one purpose, to create a free, neutral, well sourced encyclopedia.
Do edit-a-thons happen worldwide?
Yes, edit-a-thons are held around the globe. Edit-a-thons have been held in Ghana, Peru, Austria, Poland, and Taiwan among many other countries.
Does Wikipedia have firm rules?
Wikipedia has policies and guidelines but they are not firm. These rules also evolve and change over time.
Do people get paid to edit Wikipedia?
No! Wikipedia editors are volunteers! A 2014 study indicated that people edit Wikipedia both because they want to share their knowledge and because sharing that knowledge gives them a sense of personal fulfillment.
Does Wikipedia recognize that there is a lack of information about Indigenous people/places/concepts/things on its site?
Yes, Wikipedia acknowledges that there is a lack of Indigenous information and is working to change that. Along with encouraging people to hold edit-a-thons focused on Indigenous representation, the Wikipedia Foundation also held its own Indigenous Peoples' Day edit-a-thon in 2016.
Does Wikipedia have advertisements on the site?
No! In 2002 Wikipedia founder Jimmy Wales announced that he would never have advertisements on the site. This is part of Wikipedia's mission to create a free, unbiased source.
What ways can you participate in an edit-a-thon?
There are many ways to participate in an edit-a-thon! You can add references, expand a stub article, create a new article, clean up an article, and much more.
