100

Anything that has mass and takes up space

Matter

100

The study of matter and how matter changes

Chemistry

Do you always have to label your units (g, mls, etc) in science class?

YES!!!!

100

The measure of the force of gravity on you

Gravity

100

What is the basic particle from which all elements are made

atom

200

A characteristic of a substance that can be observed without changing it into another substance

Physical Property

200

Characteristic of a substance that describes the ability to change into another substance.

Chemical property

200

What is the measure of how much space something takes up?

volume

200

What is a the measure of the amount of matter (atoms) in an object?

Mass

200

What is it called when 2 or more substances are together in the same place but their atoms are not chemically bonded

mixture

300

What is the name for a substance that cannot be broken down into any other substance by chemical or physical change

element

300
What is the difference between and element and a compound?

An element is made of only one type of atom.  A compound is two or more different types of atoms chemically bonded together.

300

How would you find the density of an object?

Density = m/v

300

What is the term for the measure of the mass of a material in a given volume

density

300

How are mass and weight different?

Weight is affected by gravity.  Mass it not.

400

What is the difference between evaporation and distillation for separating mixtures?

Evaporation involves boiling a liquid out of a liquid/solid mixture.  Distillation involves boiling 2 liquids to remove the one with the lower boiling point.

400
Can an element be a molecule.  Why?

Yes.  If two or more atoms are bonded together it is a molecule. An element would have all atoms of the same kind.

400

If an object has a mass of 32g and a volume of 4ml, what is its density?

8 g/ml.  You divide mass/volume
400

Give an example of something that becomes less dense when heated.

Answers will vary.

400

How would you explain density?

The amount of mass for a given volume.

500

How is a mixture different from a compound? Give an example of each.

Mixtures and not chemically combined and can be separated.  Compounds are chemically combined. Water is a compound because the Hydrogen (H) and the Oxygen (2O) are chemically bonded and can not be separated physically. Salt water is a mixture because you can separate the water from the salt by evaporation.

500

Can a compound and element both be molecules?

Yes.  Anytime 2 or more atoms are chemically bonded, it is a molecule.

500

If a rock has a volume of 3 and a density of 9, what is its mass.  Explain.

27g. Because we are looking for MASS and not DENSITY, you have to reverse the formula and multiple.  You have to find a number that when divided by 3 (the volume) = 9 (the density)
500

Is warm air more of less dense than cold air?  Why?

Warm are is less dense than cold air because the particles spread apart when they are heated.  As temperature increases, density decreases.

500

What is the difference between and element and a compound.

A element is all atoms or the same kind bonded.  A compound is atoms of different kinds bonded.  Both are molecules.
