  • Use different sizes and colors to make graphics more important

  • Visual weight means some things look bigger and more important

  • Size shows how things compare to each other

  • Look at your design and see what catches your attention first

  • Notice how your eye moves around the design

  • Think about how the graphics are ordered and placed

What is contrast?

  • Using contrast makes your design interesting by making certain things stand out.

  • You can use contrast by making things light or dark, warm or cool, big or small.

  • Strong contrast is best because it helps you focus on important parts of the design.

  • You can use contrast to make people look at specific things in your design.

  • Remember, using contrast in a confusing way can make things messy.

What is proximity?

  • Proximity is about how things are grouped together.

  • When similar things are grouped together, they look like a team.

  • It helps us understand the main idea instead of seeing a mess of different things.

  • When things are close together, it means they are connected.

  • Putting things in a line makes them look organized and neat.

  • Grids are helpful because they make things look neat and organized too.

What is Symmetry/Asymmetry?

  • Balance means having things look and feel steady and equal.

  • When things are balanced, they are organized in a way that looks good.

  • Symmetry is one way to balance things. It means things are the same on both sides, like a mirror image.

  • Asymmetry is another way to balance things. It means things are different, but still look good together.

Try to make different versions of one design and experiment with different styles

Keep all of your sketch versions handy - they can come in handy for inspiration in the future

What is Repetition?

  • Repeating things in a design makes it look better and helps us understand it.

  • When we use the same things over and over again, it makes the design look nice and helps us know they belong together.

  • It's like using the same colors, shapes, or pictures again and again to make the design look the same all over.

  • Sometimes the repeated things may not look exactly the same, but they still look similar enough to show that they are connected.

What is color?

Color is light reflected off objects. Color has three main characteristics: hue or its name (red, green, blue, etc.), value (how light or dark it is), and intensity (how bright or dull it is).
