100
Skull and Spine X-Rays are done to detect fractures, bone erosion, calcifications, and abnormal vascularity
What is Explain to the pt that the test is noninvasive.
100
This test has the same nursing considerations as an MRI and is used to study brain diseases, like brain tumors, Alzheimer's disease, AIDS, strokes, seizure disorders, and MS
What is Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy (MRS) (Lewis 2007)
100
Electrical activity of brain is recorded by scalp electrodes to evaluate seizure disorders, cerebral diseases, CNS effects of systemic diseases, and brain death. Pt's should be informed there is no danger of electrical shock, pt should be without CNS stimulants.
What is Electroencephalography (EEG) (Lewis 2007)
100
This procedure is invasive, during procedure pts should be in lateral recumbent position and should be laid flat for atleast 2 hrs post procedure. Fluid is aspirated by needle insertion.
What is Lumbar Puncture (Lewis 2007)
100
Meningeal irritation can occur with this procedure
What is Lumbar Puncture (Lewis 2007)
200
X-ray Visualization of intracranial and extracranial blood vessels is performed to detect vascular lesions and tumors of the brain. Contrast Medium is used. This causes flushing of head and neck. Frequent neuro checks and VS are needed. Bed rest is maintained until pt is alert and VS stable. Ice and pressure dressing needs to be maintained over injection site.
What is Cerebral Angiography (Lewis 2007)
200
This MRI is used to detect changes in cerebral metabolism, blood flow, volume, or oxygenation in response to specific tasks during periods of rest and activity. Can functionally map the brain. Its nursing considerations are the same as for an MRI
What is Functional MRI (fMRI) (Lewis 2007)
200
Magnetoencephalography (MEG) uses a sesitivity machine (biomagnetometer) to detect small magnetic fields generated by neural activity. Can pin point areas damaged in the brain.
What is Explain procedure to pt and inform pt that the sensor is passive and doesn't physically touch them. (Lewis 2007)
200
Uses ultrasound and pulsed doppler technology. A probe is placed and slowly moved across the carotid artery along the course of the common carotid to the bifurcation of the external and internal carotid arteries. Measures blood velocity that evaluates the severity of stenosed carotid and vertebral arteries.
What is Carotid Duplex Studies (Lewis 2007)
200
This procedure can cause the dislodgement of thrombi
What is Cerebral Angiography (Lewis 2007)
300
Computer assisted X-ray of several levels or thin cross sections of body parts are done to detect problems such as hemorrhage, tumor, cyst, edema, infarction, brain atrophy and other abnormalities. Contrast medium may be used to enhance visualization of brain structures.
What is CT Scan (Computed Tomography) (Lewis 2007)
300
This test requires preprocedure sedation. The pt must empty their bladder. The pt should also be aware that the procedural table tilts. Pt should lie flat for a few hours post procedure. HA, N and V may occur. An X-ray of the spinal column is taken after injection of contrast medium. Detects spinal lesions, tumors and herniated or ruptured disks.
What is Myelography (Lewis 2007)
300
Electrical activity along nerve conduction pathways is recorded by placing an electrode on the skin and scalp. Stimulus generates the impulse. Used to diagnose disease, locate nerve damage, and monitor nerve function intraoperatively.
What is Evoked Potentials (Lewis 2007)
300
Noninvasive procedure used in assessing vasospasm associated with subarachnoid hemorrhage altered blood flow associated with emboli, and occlusive vascular disease. Uses same technique as Carotid Duplex except it evaluates blood flow velocity to the intracranial vessels.
What is Transcranial Doppler (Lewis 2007)
300
Allergies to these are contraindicated with contrast medium
What is iodine, shell fish, or dyes (Lewis 2007)
400
Imaging of brain, spinal cord and canal by means of magnetic energy. Can detect strokes, MS, tumors trauma, herniation, and seizures. Contrast medium may be used. (assess for allergies to contrast, Contraindicated with pacemakers and other metal apparatus'. Inform pt of need to lie still for up to an hour. Sedation may be used for claustrophobic pts.
What is Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) (Lewis 2007)
400
This test measures metabolic activity of brain to assess cell death or damage. Uses radioactive material that shows up as bright spots on the image. Used for pt's with Alzheimer's, seizure disorders, Parkinson's, tumors and strokes. Pt should be informed of the need for 2 IV lines, empty bladder before procedure and may be asked to perform activities during.
What is Positron Emission Tomography (PET) (Lewis 2007)
400
Visual evoked potentials monitors electrical activity with a radidly flashing _____________ pattern on a television screen. One eye is tested at a time.
What is Checkerboard
400
Daily Double This vein is punctured during a Cerebral Angiography and requires a pressure dressing to be maintained.
What is Femoral Vein (Lewis 2007)
400
Electromyography may have slight discomfort due to this
What is insertion of needles (Lewis 2007)
500
Magnetic Resonance Angiography (MRA) uses differential signal characteristics of blood flow to evaluate extra and intracranial blood vessels. Provides hemodynamic and anatomic information. Rapidly replacing cerebral angiography for use in diagnosing cerebrovascular diseases. Contrast may be used
What is Inform pt that test is noninvasive, assess for allergies to contrast, contraindicated with pacemakers and other metals. (Lewis 2007)
500
SPECT or single-photon emission computed tomography uses radiolabeled compound injections that leave photon trails that can be detected. They are used to visualize blood flow, oxygen or glucose metabolism in the brain. Can diagnose strokes, brain tumors and seizure disorders. Nursing considerations are similar to PET
What is Explain the need for 2 IV lines, empty bladder preprocedure, may be asked to perform activities during procedure. (Lewis 2007)
500
This test montiors electrical activity in nerve pathways with mild electrical pulses and can cause mild discomfort or muscle twitching.
What is Somatosensory evoked potentials (Lewis 2007)
