Miep is delivering the news of the Allies invading the beaches of Normandy. This is what they've been waiting daily to hear: hope of liberation.
“The men come at about eight-thirty, and leave at about five-thirty. So, to be perfectly safe, from eight in the morning until six in the evening we must move only when it is necessary.”
Otto Frank is telling the families the schedule for their daily routine when the first get to the secret annex. They must remain silent while workers are below. Mr. Frank holds complete authority.
“In spite of everything, I still believe that people are really good at heart.”
This is Anne's closing remark that Mr Frank reads in her dairy. CM- I'm not giving you example CM on this one. You're on your own : )
“I’ve watched you day after day and I’ve held my tongue. But not longer! Not after this!”
Edith Frank is completely unhinged when she caught Mr. Van Daan stealing food. She has no tolerance for his juvenile behavior, she's livid he's not putting the children before himself, and she's annoyed with Otto Frank for allowing the Van Daan family to stay with them. She will protect the kids at all cost.

Otto Frank is talking to Anne about the value of education. She might be confined indoors, but her mind provides endless possibilities with learning and reading. He's trying to provide her with a positive outlook during a terrible situation.
“So, I’ve come to you.. I know it’s a terrible thing to ask of you, living as you are, but would you take him in with you?”
Mr. Kraler is asking Mr. Frank if Mr. Dussel can stay with them in hiding. Mr. Frank makes the unpopular decision without hesitation and allows Mr. Dussel to stay. It proves Mr. Frank is their leader and the others were worried about space and food shortage.
“You must not answer back. They are our guests. We must always show the greatest courtesy to them. We’re all living under terrible tension.”
Edith Frank is scolding Anne for being rude to Mr. and Mr.s Van Daan. This scene embodies the relationship between Edith and Anne well. They are both stubborn in nature and have a tough time seeing things from one another's perspective.
“I used to think you were awful noisy.”
Peter Van Daan says this to Anne during their first date. Even though it reads as a criticism, it meant a great deal to Anne hearing Peter admit he's noticed a positive change in her.

“Mr. Van Daan, you don’t realize what is happening outside that you should warn me of a thing like that. You don’t realize what is going on.”
Jan Dussel has just arrived in hiding and hears Mr. Van Daan unhappy about adding another body due to the lack of food. Dussel delivers the harsh reality of what's happening beyond the secret annex. Jews are being sent to concentration camps where treatment is inhumane.
”Mr. Frank, you can’t leave here! This is your home! Amsterdam is your home. Your business is here waiting for you… You’re needed here… Now that the war is over, there are things that…”
Miep is begging Mr. Frank to say with her after the war is over in 1945. She's trying to be considerate and empathetic towards him by not stating the obvious. He is the only living survivor of his family and needs support.
“Let me give you a little advice, young lady. Men don’t like that kind of thing in a girl. A man likes a girl who’ll listen to him once in awhile.”
Mr. Van Daan is educating Anne on what he believes to be the qualities men seek in women after she irritates him by inserting herself into a private conversation. His ideology is exact opposite of Anne and extremely outdated.
“It’s a phase.. You heard Father.. most girls go through it… they turn to their fathers at this age.. they give all their love to their fathers.”
Margot Frank is consoling Mrs. Frank after Anne turns her mother away when waking up from her nightmare. She feels badly for the way Anne has treated their mother and is attempting to better the relationship for both parties.
“Yes. Yes. Everybody gets exactly the same… except Mr. Van Daan always gets a little bit more.”
Mr. Dussel is declares to Mrs. Van Daan that she displays favoritism towards Mr. Van Daan when dividing food. Although he constantly agitates others, most of his snide comments are laced with truth.
“That’s my wife. I told her I had to go over some papers in my office… to call me there when she got out of church.”
Mr. Kraler calms the families when they hear the phone unexpectedly ring. Mr. Kraler is keeping the hiding of the two families a secret from his wife because he wants to have the least amount of people involved.
“Oh, I embarrass you, do I? Well, I just hope the girl you marry has as good. My father used to worry about me with so many boys hanging around.”
Petronella Van Daan (Mrs. Van Daan) is chastising Peter after he begs his mom to stop embarrassing him. She's responding to Anne's question about her youthful days and boyfriends. She lacks a filter and constantly seeks attention.
“I think someday he’ll be caught and then he’ll make a bargain with the Green Police… If they’ll let him off, he’ll tell them where some Jews are hiding.”
Jan Dussel is stating his theory about the thief. He warns that if the thief is caught, he will gladly confess their hiding location to the Nazis in order to save himself. This is typical negative behavior from Mr. Dussel. He always expects the worst and creates paranoia.
“I thought you were just fine just now. You know just how to talk to them. You know how to say it. I’m no good… I can never think…”
Peter Van Daan is in awe of Anne's ability to confidently state her case against the adults. Peter compliments her performance and wishes he could be more like her. Her strengths are his weaknesses. What he fails to see are his own strengths.

“We could’ve been safe somewhere... in America or Switzerland. But no! You wouldn’t leave when I wanted to. You couldn’t leave your things.”
Mr. Van Daan is highly agitated with his wife after the drama of the mysterious phone call. The Van Daans could have been safe if they would have followed his insight and left Holland earlier. She didn't want to leave her possessions behind. It doesn't excuse his behavior, but does provide reasoning.
“You can’t throw…? Something they branded you with…? That they made you wear so they could spit on you?”
Peter Van Daan is removing his Star of David from his clothing. He's puzzled at Anne when she warns him it's against regulations. It's one of the first times Anne realizes what going into hiding really means after Peter rebukes her panic by stating he can't get in trouble because he will never be seen.
“You grownups have had your chance! But look at us… If we being thinking of all the horror in the world! We are lost!”
Anne is defending Margot after Mrs. Frank begins to yell at Margot. This marks a true turning point for Anne by standing up to the adults. It also signals the beginning of Anne and Peter's relationship. This is the first time Peter sees her more than an annoyance.
“There is so little that we parents can do to help our children. We can only try to set a good example… point the way. The rest you must do yourself. You must build your own character.”
Otto Frank is teaching Anne about the role of parents. In short, he claims that being a parent is a helpless position. You can be an excellent role model. You can teach wrong from right. You can be the perfect example, but the child has the final say on what kind of individual they will become.
