If the donor appears to be under the influence of medications or alcohol
Consult a supervisor if needed to assist with handling the donor. Defer under Physical: General Evaluation Unsatisfactory.
If at any time during the interview process you feel the donor does not adequately understand the questions, cannot communicate effectively, or is donating for reasons other than altruistic, voluntary reasons
Do not continue to donation. Defer donor under MO Investigation. Complete Donor Inquiry Record (DIR) with donor's info from SDR, scan to yourself and send to mo@lifesouth.org. Notify supervisor.
Donor states their physician recommended donation as treatment for any condition
Defer donor under Therapeutic Order Needed. Advise donor they may be eligible for collection as a Potential Therapeutic Crossover donor. Their physician must complete the Therapeutic Phlebotomy Order and fax it to the medical office.
6 important points when completing a staff administered donor interview
1. Escort donor to private interview area with the door shut if applicable.
2. Verify SDR belongs to the donor. If not, investigate.
3. Review IBBIS Donor Comments field. Consider any comments related to medical history as you ask.
4. Read questions word for word. Do not paraphrase, add or remove words in a question. Assess for comprehension.
5. Record donor's response after each question.
6. Use the DIPPM for every unexpected response, even if you know the correct comment.
Ask the donor to read the following items, and encourage the donor to ask questions:
1. Donor Educational Materials
2. Acknowledgement and Donor Consent
3. If automation - About Apheresis Blood Collection (explain pertinent points before giving to donor)
4. Research study materials if applicable
5. Medication Deferral List

If the DIPPM available does not have maps printed in color and it is difficult to determine a donor's risk during the interview process, the technician should
Use a laptop available or computer workstation to pull it up in color.
Explain these points to donors when giving them the SDR, Medication Deferral List, Donor Educational Materials, and About Apheresis Blood Collection (if applicable)
1. SDR answers are to be bubbled in fully.
2. If you are unsure of a question, please leave it blank.
3. Ensure the donor understands how to answer the gender specific questions.
4. Emphasize importance of reading the Acknowledgement and Consent when finished with the questions.
5. Medication Deferral List is for the donor to reference when answering medication questions.
6. Donor Educational Material are referenced in a questions and should help the donor understand the process and purpose of some of the interview questions.
7. About Apheresis Blood Collection provides the donor with information about apheresis blood collection.
Where should the donor sit when completing the interview?
Private interview room, away from other donors with the door shut (if applicable).
If a donor is experiencing usual seasonal allergies or has minor aches and pains that they regularly experience
Accept the donor and indicate either 1, allergies, OK or 1, minor pains, OK.
