________________  is a measure of rock’s ability to hold water.

Porosity

200

During a drought, the water table ____________.

A) rises

B) falls

falls

200

Describe at least two factors that influence the development and type of soil in a certain area.

Factors that determine a soil's characteristics include: the type of parent rock from which the soil forms, the climate in the area, the topography of the land, the organisms that live in the region, and the length of time the rock has been weathering

200

Name two nonrenewable resources

fossil fuels (coal, oil, natural gas) and nuclear fuels (uranium)

200

What is the largest ocean on Earth?

Pacific

300

A common activity like cooking a meal can use many natural  _______________________.

resource

300

Explain why copper is recycled.

Copper is recycled because it is a nonrenewable resource and the demand for it is great. It takes a very long time to form and cannot be replenished to meet the demand.

300

When large populations over pump aquifers, some wells can ________________.

dry up

300

An energy source that is used up much faster than it can be replaced is a(n) _____________  resource

nonrenewable

300

What is the name of the process where a substance goes directly from a solid to a gas without becoming a liquid?

Sublimation

An energy source that is used up much faster than it can be replaced is a(n) _____________  resource

Nonrenewable

Explain why aquifers are not found everywhere on Earth.

Aquifers are unevenly distributed on Earth because they were formed a long time ago by geological processes. These processes do not happen at the same time everywhere. Also, precipitation does not fall evenly on Earth; so, the amount of surface water is not evenly distributed. Therefore, when rocks were forming, water was not available in the same amount everywhere.

400

Explain why forests are an important resource. Include at least two reasons in your explanation. Then, identify two possible negative impacts of deforestation.

Forests are an important resource because they remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. Trees also help to hold the soil in place with their roots. Deforestation would mean loss of habitat for animals, which could lead hem to becoming extinct. It also would mean less photosynthesis, which is needed to plants to survive.

400

What is the name of the type of chemical bond formed by the sharing of electrons between atoms?

Covalent bond

500

Living things do not need natural resources for survival?

A) True

B) False

False

As a young person, how can you influence greater use of renewable energy resources?

You can talk with your family about ways to use renewable energy at
home. You can make purchasing decisions based on how products are manufactured

Explain why water today is sometimes called “the new gold.”

Humans depend on water for survival. Water is a renewable resource because it continuously recycles. But as the human population grows, the demand for fresh water increases and so, like gold, water is becoming more and more precious. If people are withdrawing from underground reservoirs of water, it means that surface water is in short supply. Because these aquifers formed a long time ago, they will not recover quickly enough to meet people’s needs. The type of aquifer depends on the type of rock that is above and below. Rainwater can replenish some aquifers, but the information in the paragraph states that, for many aquifers, the water is being removed faster than rain can replenish them. Another way in which water is like gold is that it will be harder to find.
