The purpose of this hearing is to give notice to the respondent and / or guardian what the charges are against him/her and to inform them of the need to have an attorney present for the next hearing. The respondent can either obtain their own private attorney or go to the Public Defender's office. The respondent must attend or a juvenile writ (warrant) will be issued.
What is Preliminary Inquiry (PI)

The purpose of this hearing is to give the respondent an opportunity to come to an agreement with the State Attorney's Office and enter a plea. Ideally, the case will go immediately to Final Disposition. These hearing are covered by a DJS court liaison unless the juvenile is already on probation. If the attorneys cannot come to an agreement about the case, the court will schedule a trial or an Adjudication Hearing
