Fredericksburg was a frontal assault by General Burnside up a hill to where Robert E Lee was waiting. The Union kept going up the hill and dying, making it the worst US defeat up to that point. Chancellorsville was a battle between Hooker, Stonewall Jackson and Lee. Lee won and Jackson died.
