Dorothy Vaughan has worked as a teacher, a waitress, a teacher, and then applied to be a computer at Langley, as well as a laundry worker at an army camp. She even moved away from her family to start a new job.

At NACA, Management positions and positions that pay more are all held by white people. NACA didn't really start hiring black people until the war started. The computers who were black had to work on the West side of the campus away from the white workers.
NACA was similar to society during this time and believed in segregation. They wanted to separate blacks and whites. They valued white workers more, and only needed black workers because of the war.
The screen is dark. All of a sudden you hear planes screeching over head. Shadows appear to be running everywhere. An explosion lights up the theatre and you hear voices shouting.

Malcolm Maclean, a white man, was the head of a school that was predominantly black. The school provided many opportunities for students to be trained for wartime jobs with training programs like engineering, war management, and science. Malcolm Maclean also said "The war could be the greatest break in history for minority groups."
Maclean is very progressive and his ideas were not widely accepted by many white people. Malcolm Maclean saw black people as equal and wanted to give them opportunities regardless of their skin color. Many white people did not like Maclean for these reasons.
Adam's entire family just finished racing to the hospital. They scramble to find out what floor he is on. They find out that he is on the third floor and take the first elevator up. They find his room and open the door. He is standing there quietly with something in his arms. He is smiling and his parents start to cry, but they are tears of joy.

Miriam Mann continued to remove the "Colored Computers" sign from the cafeteria. Every day that it returned, she would quietly take it down.
The women did not like having to be labeled. The sign was a reminder of segregation and they did not like to have that labeling them during lunch.
Gino and Peter are watching a movie with robots in it when Gino's phone rings. Peter starts to get mad and tells him to turn his phone off. When they return their attention to the screen there are no more robots, just what appear to be cars and trucks.

Mark and Mindy are eating out at their favorite restaurant. Mark orders dessert and the waiter brings it over. Mindy is about to take a bite when she notices something shiny sticking out the top of it. Just as she's trying to take a closer look Mark starts to ask her something.

Computers were not given credit when their computations helped the engineers succeed. They were blamed when the engineers did not succeed. Only rarely were they congratulated for their effort and work.
Being a black computer was a difficult job and a thankless job. Their work was not as highly valued as it should have been. They had to work twice as hard to get 1/2 as far.
Mr. Ambrose is watching a movie where toys are moving around the screen and talking to each other. One looks like a potato that is talking to a dinosaur. The human walks in and all of them stop moving and play "dumb."
