Fire Protection systems
Electrical device used to indicate the source or location of an activated fire alarm initiating device or the status of the system.
Annunciator Panel
Construction type in which exterior walls, bearing walls, floors, roofs, and supports are made completely or partially of wood or other ap-proved materials of smaller dimensions than those used in Type IV construction.
Type V Construction
One-section nonadjustable ladder.
Single Ladder
Hose that is designed for the purpose of moving water between a water source and a pump that is supplying attack hoselines or fire suppression systems.
Supply Hose
Basic operating system of a motor vehicle consisting of the frame, suspension system, wheels, and steering mechanism.
Chassis
Device designed to sound an alarm when the products of combustion are present in the room where the device is installed.
Smoke Alarm
Construction type in which exterior walls and structural members are made of noncombustible or limited combustible materials, but interior structural members, including walls, columns, beams, floors, and roofs, are completely or partially constructed of wood
Type III CConstructions
Straight ladder with folding hooks at the top end; the hooks anchor the ladder over the roof ridge.
Roof Ladder
Intake hose that connects pumping apparatus or portable pump to a water source.
Suction Hose
Lengths of solid wood or plastic used to stabilize vehicles and collapsed buildings during extri-cation incidents.
Cribbing
Part of the sprinkler assembly that creates the discharge pattern of the water
Deflector
Construction type in which structural members, including walls, columns, beams, floors, and roofs, are made of noncombustible or limited combustible materials and have a specified degree of fire resistance
Type I Construction
The two lengthwise members of a trussed ladder beam that are separated by truss or separation blocks
Rails
Attack hose connected to a discharge when the hose is loaded; this shortens the time it takes to deploy the hose for fire fighting
Preconnect
Bolt on a vehicle’s door frame that the door latches onto in order to close.
Nader Pin
Automatic valve that permits liquid flow in only one direction. For example, the inline valve that prevents water from flowing into a foam concentrate container when the nozzle is turned off or there is a kink in the hoseline.
Check Valve
Heavy timber construction in which interior and exterior walls and their associated structural members are made of noncombustible or limited combustible material; interior structural fram-ing consists of heavy timber with minimum dimensions larger than those used in Type III construction.
Type IV Constructiosn
Main structural member of a ladder support-ing the rungs or rung blocks.
Beam
Small tool primarily used to tighten or loosen hose couplings; can also be used as a prying tool or a gas key.
Spanner Wrench
Powered hydraulic tool designed for straight pushing operations
Extension Ram
Alarm-initiating device that is de-signed to be responsive to a predetermined rate of temperature increase or to a predetermined tempera-ture level
Heat Detector
Construction type that is similar to Type I except that the degree of fire resis-tance is lower.
Type II Construction
Devices attached to the inside of the beams on fly sections; used to hold the fly section in place after it has been extended.
Pawls
Nonthreaded coupling with two hooklike lugs that slip over a ring on the opposite coupling and then rotate 90 degrees clockwise to lock
Quarter-Turn Coupling
Lifting jack that uses hydraulic fluid power supplied from a manually operated hand lever
