A More Effective Executive

This Drucker principle may have encouraged J.S. Held to acquire VWM Analytics, Thomas’ employer from 2013 to 2020.

What is “Balances Short Term and Long Term? (Keeping its attention on the future)

Thomas believes this master’s degree will help him not only develop managerial and leadership skills but will also improve his credibility academically as an expert witness, an unfortunate, but true, facet of expert witness work in the US.

What is a CGU Drucker MBA?  (Unfortunately, your resume is one of the only things juries have to judge you on, so continuing education is strongly encouraged.)

This principle discussed in The Effective Executive is one area in which Thomas should try to improve if he is to have a long, successful career.  Mainly due to the fact that he presently has an attitude of “if you want it done right, do it yourself” when it comes to difficult projects.

What is “effective leaders manage their weaknesses by building strong teams, delegating tasks, and putting in place systems that mitigate weaknesses.”

This topic discussed in Peter Drucker’s The Practice of Management best relates to Thomas’ recent feelings about his firm’s inability to keep up with market rates of compensation, sparking a new interest in finding new employment or considering self-employment as an expert witness.

What is “employing the whole man”?  (Wages to the company are an expense, wages to me are my livelihood and well-being, and I need to be doing what is best for myself and my future family.)

Thomas believes this work-related skill, which he struggles with currently, is immensely important to his professional development and his goals to improve this skill were a significant driver in his decision to attend CGU.

What is networking?  (This is certainly one area of the business world in which I struggle, not simply due to introversion, but also the time demand and the difficulties in maintaining relationships over long periods).

This Drucker principle best relates to Thomas’ belief that one should take responsibility for their mistakes, even if it reflects poorly on their work.

What is Responsibility and Accountability at All Levels

Learning about this Drucker principle recently encouraged Thomas to develop and present a practice-wide training webinar on the interpretation of work-life expectancy in the context of lifetime loss of earnings claims.

What is Employee Orientation?  (I have recently committed to developing training webinars and courses for new employees in an attempt to not only relieve pressure on my own to-do list but to improve engagement in new hires.)

Thomas’ belief that putting resources into the training and development of junior analysts will encourage retention and improve work product quality, thus setting himself up for success in the long-term is most closely related to this Drucker principle.

What is Employee Orientation.  Will also accept Balances Short Term and Long Term Results (Do everything you can to help employees grow).

This Drucker quote relates to J.S. Held’s motto “we deliver the news” and has helped Thomas focus in on what it takes to be a trusted and reliable expert witness, as opposed to a ‘hired gun’ in the face of client pressures to “play with the numbers” for a favorable outcome.

What is “what business are we in”?

Thomas was pleasantly surprised to learn that he had been inadvertently following this Drucker principle since he started his professional career.  Mostly related to his believe that has felt personally responsible for the success of his team, and by extension, his firm through the quality of his work.

What is Responsibility and Accountability at All Levels?

Which publication by Peter Drucker does Thomas believe is due a second read-through now that he has a better understanding of Drucker’s principles and teachings?

The Practice of Management

What practice of efficient managers is essential in Thomas’ day-to-day work activities, especially when clients/attorneys call with what forensic economists lovingly call “economic emergencies” such as the need for a full business valuation “for mediation tomorrow”?

What is managing time efficiently?  (Every week, usually on Friday when attorneys are in their offices catching up on their week, I get calls asking for numbers “due yesterday.”  Time management is the first skill you learn in my field.)
