What are the 3 parts of a Halligan tool?

Pick, Adze, & Fork

100

When carrying long tools what part should be toward the ground?

Long tools should be carried with the head of the tool down toward the ground.

Be aware of overhead obstructions & wires, especially when using pike poles & ladders.

100

What type of approach is taken when investigating a fire's origin and cause?

Fire investigators should use the scientific method with a systematic analysis.

100

True or False: When doing overhaul firefighters can discard debris if they self determine it to be of no value.

FALSE. You should never discard debris until a fire investigator gives their approval.

100

This is a large square or rectangular sheet made of heavy canvas or plastic material that is spread over furniture and other items to protect them from water runoff and falling debris.

Salvage Cover

200

What are the 2 types of slab core construction used in wood doors?

  • Solid-Core Doors: Solid wood core blocks covered by a face panel. Typically used for entrance doors as they’re heavy & may be difficult to force.
  • Hollow-Core Doors: Lightweight, honeycomb interior, which is covered by a face panel. Often used as interior doors, such as for bedrooms, & are easy to force.
200

You should don your SCBA if carbon monoxide levels in the area reach this limit.

35 Parts Per Million

200

What is directly below the most damaged area on the ceiling?

Fire point of origin.
200

How many people should be in responsible for taking custody of evidence?

Only one person should be responsible for taking custody of evidence

200

This is the process of final extinguishment after the main body of a fire has been knocked down. All traces of fire must be extinguished at this time.

Overhaul

300

Which "Letter" Tool(s) can be used to open the following:

1. Double Doors with Panic Bars

2. Lock Cylinders

1. J Tool

2. A Tool & K Tool

300

A safety consideration during salvage operations is that a structure can be loaded with tons of extra water weight leading to a collapse.

What is a warning sign that a structure is overloaded with water?

Warning Signs: Water leaking through ceiling joints & sagging areas of ceilings.

300

What are the components of the Fire Tetrahedron

Fuel, Heat, Oxygen, & A Chemical Reaction.

300

When photographing the fire scene what area should you start in first?

The fire scene should be extensively photographed starting with the area with the least amount of damage & proceeding toward the area of possible origin.

300

What is the difference between Possible Cause & Probable Cause?

  • Possible Cause: A hypothesis with less than a 50% certainty level.
  • Probable Cause: A hypothesis with greater than a 50% certainty level.
400

What are the 2 types of hydraulic tools designed to force open doors that open inward?

Rabbit Tool (comprising a hand-held hydraulic pump, a hydraulic jaw or spreader, and, in some cases, a high-pressure hydraulic hose.)

Hydra-Ram (one-piece hydraulic tool that contains both the pump and jaw or spreader in a single unit.)

400

What are the are 2 ways in which you can manually deactivate non-recessed sprinklers?

Sprinkler Wedge (Small triangular piece of wood. Insert 2 wedges on opposite sides, between the orifice & the deflector of the sprinkler, & pushing them together plugs the opening effectively, stopping the flow from standard upright & pendant sprinkler heads.)

&

Sprinkler Stop (Device with a rubber stopper that can be inserted into a sprinkler head.)

400

What are the 3 fire patterns that may show on a wall that can indicate that fire spread up and out from something at the base?

V Pattern, U Pattern, or Hourglass Pattern

400

Identify and define 3 different types of evidence that can be collected and processed.

  • Physical/Real Evidence: Physical/tangible item that proves/disproves a particular fact/issue
  • Demonstrative Evidence: Anything that can be used to validate a theory or to show how something could have occurred.
  • Documentary Evidence: Any type of written record or document that is relevant to the case.
  • Testimonial Evidence: Verbal testimony of a witness given under oath in court or during specific legal proceedings.
  • Direct Evidence: Testimony of witnesses who observe acts or detect something through their five senses or through surveillance equipment such as CCTV
  • Circumstantial Evidence: Evidence that is based on logical inference rather than personal observation.
400

Fire that is intentionally ignited in an area or under circumstances where and when there should not be a fire is what type of fire cause?

Incendiary Fire

Describe the process of breaching 2 of the following:

1. Breaching a Wall Frame

2. Breaching a Masonry Wall

3. Breaching a Metal Wall

4. Breaching a Floor

1. Size up the wall, check for safety hazards (electrical outlets, wall switches, plumbing). Inspect that the wall is not load bearing. Sound the wall to locate any studs. Make a hole between the studs. Cut the sheetrock as close to the studs as possible. Enlarge the hole by extending it from stud to stud & as high as necessary.

2. Size up wall, checking for any safety hazards. Inspect that the wall is not load bearing. Select a row of five masonry blocks at 2-3 ft above floor. Using a sledgehammer, knock 2 holes in each masonry block (each hole should pierce into the hollow core of the masonry blocks). Repeat the process above 4 more times reducing 1 block at a time so that you end with a pyramid shape. Knock out the remaining portion of the masonry blocks by hitting masonry blocks parallel to the wall rather than perpendicular to it. Clear any reinforcing wire using bolt cutters, & enlarge the hole as needed.

3. Size up the wall, checking for any safety hazards (electrical outlets, wall switches, plumbing). Inspect that the wall is not load bearing. Select an appropriate tool with a metal-cutting blade or a torch. Open the wall using a diamond shaped or inverted V-cut. Make the cut so the cut piece of the wall falls into the building & no sharp bottom edges are exposed.

4. Size up floor area, checking for hazards in the area to be cut. Sound the floor to locate floor joists. Use an appropriate cutting tool to cut one side of the hole. Cut the opposite side. Make two additional cuts at right angles to the first cuts. Remove any flooring that have been loosened. Secure the area around the hole to prevent others from falling through the hole.

When removing water from a structure a water chute may be created. Describe the function of a water chute & the steps taken to create one.

A water chute is used to catch dripping water & direct it toward a drain or outside through a window or doorway.

1. Fully open a salvage cover flat on the ground.

2. If using pike poles, lay one pole on one edge of the cover, & roll the cover around the handle. Roll the cover tightly toward the middle.

3. Repeat Step 2 on other side, until the two rolls are 1 to 3 feet apart.

4. Turn the cover upside down. Position chute so it collects dripping water & channels it toward a drain or outside opening. Place chute on floor, with one end propped up by a chair or object.

500

What are the 3 types of Arsonists?

  • Serial Arsonist: Person who sets three or more fires in succession with an emotional “cooling-off” period between each fire.
  • Spree Arsonist: Sets three or more fires in separate locations with no lengthy cooling-off period between fires.
  • Mass Arsonist: Sets 3 or more fires at or near the same location during a limited time period.
500

All evidence at the fire scene should be properly tagged with a label. What information should be on this tag?

Date Found, Time Found, Location Found, & Investigator’s Name.

Not on the label but also recorded separately is the name of the person who found it.

This is a tool with a point that can be inserted into the shackles of a padlock. As the point is driven farther into the lock, it gets larger and forces the shackles apart until they break.
