How should rope be cleaned & stored?

  • Wash with mild soap & water or use special rope washer. Do NOT use bleach. 
  • Do NOT pack or store wet or damp rope. Air dry suspended rope out of the sunlight.
  • Store where there is some air circulation, away from extreme temps, & away from light.
  • Avoid placing where fumes might damage.
  • Don’t place heavy objects on top.

How is an SCBA pack "converted" for rescue?

  1. Unbuckle and Elongate: Unbuckle the SCBA waist strap and elongate it to create a longer loop. 
  2. Secure Between Legs: Pass the elongated waist strap between the downed firefighter's legs, ensuring it's secured and not too tight. 
  3. Secure to the SCBA: Secure the ends of the waist strap to the SCBA waist belt or harness loops, creating a secure loop around the firefighter's waist.

What is the difference between VES Method versus O-VEIS Method and which is safer?

  • Vent-Enter-Search (VES): One firefighter sets up a ladder to porch roof, quickly opens/breaks the bedroom window, enter & performs a quick search of the room, & exits back onto the porch roof.
  • Oriented-Vent-Enter-Isolate-Search (O-VEIS): Team sets up a ladder to porch or window, assess/determine if room appears to be tenable to victim/FF, if so then the window is opened/broken, enter & ASAP locates & closes the door to the hallway (to control flow path)
