What is fact?

What is active bystander?

What is misconception? Domestic violence can consist of (but not limited to) emotional/psychological, financial, social, environmental, spiritual, sexual, and physical abuse.

Individuals who choose to stay in an abusive relationship are not victims. They could leave their partners if they wished to do so.

What is misconception? There are many reasons why an individual may not, or cannot, leave their partner. These include fear, lack of economic resources, isolation, fear of losing children, and the danger of leaving.

What is Project SafeSpace?

A method of intervention that involves working with someone else or asking another individual to address a concern when you do not feel prepared, safe, or able to do so.

Victims/Survivors of Intimate Partner Violence are more likely to visit the Emergency Department, particularly at vulnerable times during their relationship.

What is truth? A review of cases of women murdered by a partner found that 44% had visited the Emergency Department within two years of their death. Of these, 93% had at least one visit to the Emergency Department related to an injury.

A course of conduct involving more than one instance of unwanted attention, harassment, unwanted physical or verbal contact, use of threatening words, or any course of conduct that could be reasonably regarded as alarming

What is stalking?

People with disabilities experience violent crimes at the same rate as people without disabilities   

What is fiction? People with disabilities experience nearly twice the rate of violent crime, and some forms (like sexual violence) are up to four times as highes than for nondisabled people

What is truth? The United Nations reports that 49 countries have no laws protecting women from domestic violence.

What is fiction? Stalking victims are most frequently stalked by people they do know. 40% by a current/former intimate partner. 42% by an acquaintance.

What is The Indiana Coalition Against Domestic Violence (ICADV)

As the number of bystanders increases, the personal responsibility that an individual bystander feels decreases. Consequently, so does the individual’s tendency to help.

What is diffusion of responsibility?

Abusers are violent due to difficulty with impulse control and/or anger management.

What is misconception? A majority of abusers do not suffer from impulse control, as they are skilled at keeping their controlling and abusive behavior behind closed doors.
