Though neither is titanium, a compound of these two elements is removed from reduced ilmenite to create rutile in the Becher process. Compounds of these two elements are the most commercially significant ones to undergo direct reduction by elemental carbon or syngas (“sin-gas”). These two elements can form the non-stoichiometric (“non-STOY-kee-oh-MET-rick”) compound wüstite (“WOOST-ite”). Aluminum powder is used to very, very energetically separate a compound of these two elements in the (*) thermite reaction. These two elements form the modern catalyst of the Haber–Bosch process. Compounds of these two elements include hematite and magnetite. Exposure to the air produces a distinctly red compound from, for 10 points, what transition metal and what common gas, which are found together in rust?

K-epsilon models are used to computationally simulate this phenomenon. A method for modelling systems exhibiting this phenomenon decomposes the equations of motion to time-averaged components and a fluctuating component to produce the RANS equations. One theory of this phenomenon predicts an energy spectrum function with a negative-five-thirds power law, and assumes a length scale equal to the cube of kinematic viscosity divided by energy dissipation rate all raised to the one-fourth power. This phenomenon was predicted to be locally isotropic by (*) Kolmogorov (“kull-ma-GOR-uff”). This phenomenon occurs at higher Reynolds numbers and features the formation of eddies and vortices. For 500 points, name this counterpart to laminar flow, in which a fluid’s motion is extremely chaotic.
