How is mental disease defined?
Behavior that is troublesome or dangerous to the individual or others

One does not need to experience what an individual is experiencing in order to predict what they will do.
Behavior as a dependent variable was stolen by WHAT? (Freud's idea)
Mental apparatus/life
What aspect of psychology and mental disease is most helpful for behavior analysts?
Where did Freud look for causes of behavior?
INSIDE the organism -> mentalistic.
Name one of the 5 problems of the idea of mental apparatus?
Act as a unit of behavior was not clarified (only if expressing thoughts)
Dimensions of behavior not represented (behavior more likely in certain scenarios)
The theory of learning not as changes in behavior but as acquisitions of ideas to later be expressed.
Explicit treatment of behavior as datum not followed (suggests activity such as discrimination and self-control, with no description of behavior)
5. Misinterpreted the nature of the observation of one’s own behavior (awareness of the presence of God)How does Skinner propose to change the behavior of mentally diseased people?
Arranging environmental variables because it is probably learned as a product of reinforcing contingencies.
Why was Freud unable to use operational definitions to describe causes of behavior in the mentalistic view?
He would have gotten stuck with observable, manipulable, and physical variables! There is no way to measure the mental apparatus/no units.
What is the implication of Freud's mentalistic view on society today?
This mentalistic view has affected how people think about/discuss behavior and we must challenge it, it distracts from actual behavior causes with metaphorical ideas- we should focus on radical behaviorism.
From the comment: why is a vocabulary increase of internal feelings (aches/pains) considered unnecessary?
It is hard to teach vocabulary of this as it is a physical state that the INDIVIDUAL has a connection with/others cannot feel it. The vocabulary for these is taught and a mimic of the teacher/it is shaped .
