When is it appropriate to dispense an injectable alpha-2 agonist (Xylazine, Detomdine)? 

HINT: 5 requirements

Only when all the below are met: 

For a single animal, a specific single purpose, specific single incident use, client is aware of inherent dangers of use, the Alpha-2 agonist must be administered orally. 

It is considered unethical conduct to prescribe/dispense any quantity outside of these limits.

If he approves the prescription being filled or another vet can look at a file and determines the medication is appropriate, another veterinarian at the same practice can write and sign a prescription referral form.
