What was the Eisenhower Doctrine? What foreign event prompted the Eisenhower Doctrine?
What is The Eisenhower Doctrine promised that the US would support Middle Eastern countries threatened by communist aggression. The doctrine was announced after the Suez Crisis, which occurred when the nationalist president of Egypt, Nasser, nationalized the Suez Canal. This threatened the economies of Britain and France because they relied on the canal to receive oil. Despite American attempts to stop them, Britain, France, and Israel all invaded Egypt. Eisenhower feared that this would prompt Soviet intervention to support Nasser. To the surprise of the French and British, the US refused to supply them with oil. This meant they had to withdraw. Nasser remained in power, the USSR did not intervene, and the United Nations sent a police force to Sinai to keep peace between Egypt and Israel.
