The term comes from the 1600's term "Blue Devils", which was a way to refer to visual hallucinations that occur from alcohol withdrawal. It was later changed to "The Blues" in the 1800's and referred to the drinking of alcohol. It changed one last time in the early 1900s to reference a overall mood of agitation or depression.
