Earth's Layers
Which System is It?
Where Did It Go?
What does that mean?
Monsoons
100

What are the layers of the Earth's crust?

Inner Core, Outer Core, Mantle, and the Crust. Asthenosphere, Lithosphere

100

What are Earth's 4 major systems?

Biosphere, Hydrosphere, Geosphere, Atmosphere

100

What is it called when water enters the atmosphere? What is it called when water in the atmosphere forms clouds? What is it called when liquid or solid water falls to the ground as rain or snow?

Evaporation

Condensation

Precipitation

100

What is a biome? List a few.

A large area or region with a specific climate and certain types of plants and animals that live there.

Forest                  Grasslands

Aquatic                Tundras

Desert

100

What is a monsoon?

A strong wind that changes direction with the seasons.

200

Which is the hottest layer?

The Core
200

Which one does not belong and why?

grass, dirt, trees, dog

200

What processes or events in the geosphere constantly affect the shape of land?

Earthquakes and volcanoes

200

What is a glacier?

Fresh water that is frozen in large layers of ice.

200

Where do monsoons occur?

Southeast Asia and India

300

Which layer is responsible for the Earth having a magnetic field?

The outer core

300

What gasses can be found in the atmosphere?

Oxygen, Carbon Dioxide, Argon, Nitrogen

300

How does flowing water affect the shape of the land over time?

Flowing water weathers rocks into small pieces. The water erodes the pieces and deposits them in other places. Plants in the biosphere grow in the sediments and soil.

300

What is groundwater?

Water held underground in spaces between soil and rock.

300

Why do monsoons occur?

Monsoons result from the unequal heating of the land and the ocean.

400

What is the thinnest layer of the the Earth?

Crust

400

What do each of these terms mean:

atmo

bio

geo

hydro

Atmo = Air

Bio = Life

Geo = Earth

Hydro = Water

400

What happens when wind moves sediments across the earth's surface?

Sand dunes, other landforms and waves that crash onto land are formed.

400

What is deposition?

The laying down of sediment and rock in a new place.

400

What damage can a monsoon cause?

Rushing steams sweep away soil.

Low-lying areas flood, destroying homes and crops.

People and livestock are at risk of drowning.

500

What are convection currents and where can they be found?

It is the movement of magma which is believed to be responsible for the movement of the Earth's tectonic plates. It is found in the mantle.

500

A dog was on a walk along a dirt path and sniffed through the grass. He got to a pond and started pawing at the fish swimming. Which systems do you see interacting?

Biosphere: dog, fish, grass

Hydrosphere: pond

Geosphere: dirt

Atmosphere: the air he is breathing

500

All of Earth's tectonic plates were once all together, before they separated, what were they called?

Pangea

500

What is erosion?

The movement of rocks or soil caused by wind, water, or ice.

500

Which seasons do monsoons occur and how are they different?

Winter and Summer.

In the winter the land is colder than the water. Dry monsoons blow from the land towards the ocean. Plants wither and wells run dry.

In the summer the water is cooler than the land. The monsoons blow from the ocean toward the land. They bring humid air and large amounts of rain, which causes crops to grow rapidly.
