What is the difference between weather and climate?
Weather - day to day
Climate - Long term
Where are protons, neutrons, and electrons found and what are their charges?
Protons - Found in nucleus (+)
Neutrons - Found in nucleus (charge of 0)
Electrons - Found outside the nucleus (-)
What are the 3 states of matter?
What are the 3 modes of thermal energy transfer?
Radiation, convection, and conduction
What is the entire water cycle?
Evaporation (liquid to gas)
Condensation (gas to liquid)
Precipitation (water that falls to the Earth's surface)
What is the major contributor of climate change?
Fossil fuel combustion form human activities
What are atoms?
Atoms are the basic building blocks for everything in the universe
Which states of matter take up space?
All of them do
What is radiation?
The transfer of heat through invisible infrared waves that travel through air or space
What is the fuel for hurricanes?
Warm Ocean water
Name all 4 greenhouse gases
Water vapor, CO2, Mathane (CH4), and Nitrous oxide
Number of protons
Which state of matter is the most dense and which one is the least dense
Most dense - Solid
Least dense - gas
What is convection?
The transfer of heat through liquid or gas
What are hurricanes categorized by?
Wind Speed
What is contributing to increased greenhouse gases?
Burning fossil fuels, farming, deforestation, producing food, transportation, smoke and factories
What is an atomic mass?
Protons + Neutrons
What happens when heat is added
Particles increase in energy and move faster
What is conductiion?
The transfer of heat from one object to another through direct contact
Differences in air pressures = ?
WIND!!!!!!
What is the greenhouse effect?
Sunlight warms the Earth's surface through the atmosphere. When the sun sets, the surface cools and releases heat back into the air. Some heat gets trapped by gases in the air (greenhouse gasses)
Why are electrons important?
Important for reactions
What happens when heat is removed?
Particles decrease in energy and move slower
Conductors vs. Insulators
Conductors allow heat to pass through easily and insulators don't
3 reasons for uneven heating
Latitude
Elevation
Specific heat
