100
How do fossils tell us about how life has changed?
We can look at layers of fossils and see what types of animals and plants lived on earth in the past.
100
Describe the rock cycle.
The way igneous, sedimentary, and metamorphic rocks change from one to another is called the rock cycle.
100
What is the difference between weathering and erosion?
Weathering is the breaking down of rocks. Erosion is the moving of these broken down pieces.
100
How many different layers is the earth made up of?
The earth is made up of 4 plates.
100
Why is the shape of the continents possible evidence for plate tectonics?
The continents seem to fit together like puzzle pieces.
200
Remembering our experiment cycle, what are the properties that identify minerals?
Colour, Streak, Lustre, Hardness, Weight (specific gravity)
200
How can sedimentary rock change into metamorphic rock?
Sedimentary rock can be pushed down into the earth and, with high temperatures and pressure, it can change into metamorphic rock.
200

The main force that pulls rocks downhill

Gravity

200
What are the names of the 4 layers of the earth?
Crust, Mantle, Outer Core, Inner Core
200
What is the name of the supercontinent that Wegener thought once existed? BONUS What does this name mean in Greek?
The supercontinent is named Pangaea. In Greek, it means "all lands".
300
Describe igneous rock.
Igneous rock forms from the hardening of liquid magma.
300

Describe how our clay experiment demonstrated the rock cycle?

We broke the clay into pieces and pressed them into sedimentary rock. We then exerted heat and pressure on the clay to change it into metamorphic rock. Using the hot plate, we heated the clay until it bubbled into igneous rock.

300

What is deposition?

When rocks and sediment are dropped or deposited in a new place.

300
Which layer of earth floats on the surface of the earth?
The crust floats on the surface of the earth.
300
Briefly describe the theory of plate tectonics.
The theory of plate tectonics says that the surface of the Earth is made up of 12 plates that are continually moving. They started out as one group called Pangaea, and moved to where they are today as the continents.
400
Describe Sedimentary rock.
Rock particles carried by water settles as sediment. As layers of sediment press down over time, it forms sedimentary rock.
400
When rocks are melted into magma, what kind of a rock will they turn into?
Magma cools into igneous rocks.
400

What is the correct order of the 3 parts of the erosion cycle?

weathering, erosion, deposition

400
Which layer of the earth is partly solid and partly melted rock?
The mantle is made up of partly solid and partly melted rock.
400
What is the name of the plate that we live on?
We live on the North American Plate.
500
Describe Metamorphic Rock.
Metamorphic rock is created when igneous or sedimentary rock becomes buried so deep the pressure and temperature turn it into metamorphic rock.
500
How could an igneous rock become a sedimentary rock?
If the igneous rock is weathered into small pieces, the pieces can layer as sediment, and be pressed down into sedimentary rock.
500

Give an example of how weathering could be destructive.

Weathering may include violent storms, such as a hurricane, or flood.

Rocks, mud, or snow can collect and slide down the side of a mountain

500
Which two metals make up most of the outer and inner core of the earth? Bonus: Describe how these metals are different in the two different layers.
The outer and inner core of the earth are made up mainly of iron and nickel. In the outer core, these metals are liquid. In the inner core, these metals are solid.
500
How many of the 12 plates can you name?
North American, Caribbean, South American, Eurasian, African, Antarctic, Indo-Australian, Juan de Fuca, Pacific, Cocos, Nazca, Caribbean
