What is evolution?
The change of a species over time.
100
What is extinction?
When a complete species has died, leaving no more.
100
What is a fossil?
A fossil is the naturally preserved remains or traces of animals or plants that lived in the geologic past.
100
Why is the geologic time scale not placed in a calendar?
It is wayyyyy to big!

The mass extinction of dinosaurs and other organisms occurred at the end of the Cretaceous Period. What do most scientists think was a major factor in this mass extinction?
An object from space struck Earth causing climate changes.
200
Give on example of natural selection.
Answers may vary.
200
Name one species you know of that is extinct.
Answers may vary.
200
What is a mold?
An impression of the dead organism.

What do fossils tell us?
By studying the fossil record we can tell how long life has existed on Earth, and how different plants and animals are related to each other. Often we can work out how and where they lived, and use this information to find out about ancient environments. Fossils can tell us a lot about the past.
300
What is relative age?
The age of something compared to another.
300
Which of the following is most consistent with the modern theory of Evolution? A. Parents pass their physical traits to their offspring; those offspring with traits that help them survive in the environment are able to reproduce. B. Parents change their physical traits in order to survive in the environment, then those parental traits are passed to their offspring. C. Life on this planet came from another planet far out in space. D. Living organisms have not changed for hundreds of millions of years.
A. Parents pass their physical traits to their offspring; those offspring with traits that help them survive in the environment are able to reproduce.
300
Name one thing that can cause an animal to go extinct.
Global Warming, Global Cooling, Hunting, Deforestation, etc. Answers may vary.
300
Is extinction permanent?
YES!
400
What is absolute age?
The age of something in a numerical unit.
400
What is an adaptation?
A change or the process of change by which an organism or species becomes better suited to its environment

Passenger pigeons are now extinct. What can scientists do to help bring back this bird? A. Stop the hunting of the birds. B. There is nothing scientists can do. C. Provide suitable habitat for the birds. D. Provide the right kind of food for the birds.
B. There is nothing scientists can do.
400
Why is evolution important?
Without evolution organisms would not be able to adapt to their environments. If organisms could not adapt they would not survive.
500
What does the Law of Superposition state?
In undisturbed layers of rock, the oldest rocks are at the bottom and the yougest rocks are at the top.
500
How did taking one type of seed or insect out of an environment effect the other species living in that environment? (Finch Food Activity)
When a specific type of seed or insect was removed from the environment the species of bird that ate that food did not thrive in that environment. It could have caused starvation and the dying off of that species of bird.
500
Give one example of a natural factor of extinction and one example of a man-made factor of extinction.
Natural: Asteroid Impact Man-Made: Hunting Answers may vary.

What is a cast?
A fossil formed when an animal, plant, or other organism dies, its flesh decays and bones deteriorate due to chemical reactions; minerals gradually enter into the cavity, resulting in a cast.
