What is the biosphere?
The Earth system that includes all living things. (plants, animals, humans)
Why is the ozone layer important?
The ozone layer protects us from harmful UV rays from the Sun. The Ozone protects us from 97% of the UV rays.
What are the parts of Earth's geosphere?
Crust, Upper Mantle, Lower Mantle, Outer Core, and Inner Core. (rocks, Mountains, soil...)
How does the geosphere & biosphere interact?
Geosphere is a habitat for animals, geosphere is home to plants (soil). We live on the geosphere.
In which layer do Meteors burn up
The Mesosphere, which is the middle layer of the atmosphere...fun fact it is also the coldest.
What is the Geopshere?
The Earth system that includes all non-living things (rocks, minerals, sediments ,etc.)
The warming of Earth is called _____
The Greenhouse Effect
How might the biosphere be affected if a harmful substance entered the geosphere?
The biosphere may be affected because plants live in the soil which is apart of the geosphere. Plants can die due to the harmful substance in the soil. Animals can also eat organisms that live in the soil or use the soil as their habitat.
How does the geosphere & hydrosphere interact?
Geosphere depends on water for soil, geosphere is eroding and weathered due to rain, lakes, oceans.
Remember this one...Jenna wanted to test which bread ants prefer to eat, she would put a piece of wheat bread, white bread, and french bread on the grass near an anthill to see how many ants end up on each bread slice. What variable is Jenna trying to test by using different types of bread?
The Independent Variable also known as the TEST variable
What is the hydrosphere?
The system that includes all of the water on, under or above Earth
What is a sphere that you have an interdependent (Attached) relationship with? **THIS ANSWER CAN VARY.
Geosphere- we live on the geosphere
Biosphere- friends, family, plants & animals that we eat.
Atmosphere- We breathe air in the atmosphere, protect from UV rays, protect from meteors
Hydrosphere- water we use to drink, shower, swim in.
How might the biosphere be affected if a harmful substance entered the Hydrosphere?
The biosphere may be affected because plants need the hydrosphere for fresh water. Plants can die due to the harmful substance in the water. Animals can also drink water that has been affected and could die from it.
Explain the Greenhouse Effect
Some of the Sun's UV rays come down and hits the Earth, however some of the rays get trapped by Earth's atmosphere. The GREENHOUSE GASES prevent heat from escaping which warms the Earth to higher temperatures.
Read the scenario, what two interactions are occurring? The Colorado River forms the Grand Canyon.
Colorado River: Hydrosphere and the Grand Canyon: Geosphere
What is the atmosphere?
The system that includes all of the layers of gasses that surround the Earth
When a volcano erupts how does the ash from the eruption interact with the hydrosphere, atmosphere and biosphere?
When the ash goes into the atmosphere, it can block sunlight from reaching Earth's surface. No sunlight means that plants can't make their own food - which affects the biosphere. Ash can also go into the water cycle through rain or falling into streams or rivers.
Interdependent
To depend on one another
How does Earth's atmosphere protect us. What would happen if we didn't have an atmosphere?
Our atmosphere contains the air that we breathe, our atmosphere (ozone layer) protects us from the suns harmful rays, atmosphere protects us from meteors coming to Earth's surface.
Which variable is purposely changed in an experiment?
The independent variable or test variable
What is a system?
A collection of parts that are working together.
What layer of Earth's atmosphere do we live on?
The Troposphere
Earth has five (5) systems. Which system has many landforms?
Geosphere
Why is the Greenhouse Effect bad for Earth?
Leads to flooding, glaciers melt, evaporating of habitats (ponds, lakes, etc.) , plants/animals can die in extreme heat.
Experiment 1: How do the different chemicals in fertilizer affect plant growth? What is the dependent/outcome variable?
How the plant grows (This is measurable)
