What is ecology?
Ecology is the scientific study of the interactions between living species, such as humans, and their physical surroundings. Individuals, populations, communities, ecosystems, and the biosphere are all considered in ecology.
Habitat preservation
not destroying organism’s habitat
What impact do humans have on animals
- populations of wildlife with food, water, shelter and space
- takes away habitats (e.g wolves moving closer to human activity)
- pollution effects some animals breathing
biotic factor
any living thing in the environment
gene pool diversity
variety of different forms of traits in the DNA of a population
What is an organism?
An organism is any individual entity that exhibits the properties of life. Ecology is a synonym for “life form”
abiotic factor
any non-living thing in the environment
Community
all the living organisms in one area. The ducks, swans, turtles, bugs, and water plants in the pond.
how are ecosystems affected by human activity?
- climate change
- pollution
- habitat loss
- ocean acidification
- permafrost melting
niche
an organisms specific job in it's environment
When prey increases
predators increase
when does competition increase
when population increases or when resources decrease
species
a group of organisms that can mate and reproduce together and make viable offspring
How do humans affect the ecosystem?
- overpollution
- overpopulation
- the burning of fossil fules
- deforstation
How much energy is transferred from one trophic level to the next and why?
10%
